Carpet-to-LVP is the most requested flooring upgrade in Austin right now. Here is everything you need to know before you start.

Carpet-to-LVP conversions are the most common flooring job we do in Austin. Homeowners are tired of carpet that traps pet hair, holds odors, and shows stains. LVP is durable, easy to clean, looks great, and adds real value to a home. Here is the full process from start to finish.

Why Austin Homeowners Are Replacing Carpet with LVP

Carpet made sense in a different era. Today, Austin homeowners with pets, kids, or rental properties have moved decisively toward hard surface flooring. LVP specifically has become the dominant choice because it is 100 percent waterproof, handles Austin heat and humidity better than hardwood, costs less than tile, and installs faster than any other option.

From a resale perspective, carpet in living areas and bedrooms is increasingly seen as a negative by buyers in the Austin market. Real estate agents consistently report that homes with hard surface flooring throughout sell faster and at higher prices than comparable homes with carpet.

Step One: Carpet Removal and Disposal

Carpet removal starts with pulling up the carpet itself, then the padding underneath, then removing the tack strips around the perimeter of the room. The carpet and padding are cut into manageable strips and rolled up for disposal. Tack strips are pried up carefully to avoid damaging the subfloor.

Disposal is included in our standard demo pricing. We haul everything away and dispose of it properly. The dump fee is included in our estimate. If you want to save money, you can remove the carpet yourself before we arrive, which reduces the demo cost.

One thing to be aware of: carpet in older Austin homes, particularly those built before 1980, may be covering original hardwood floors. Before we demo any carpet, we check for this. If there is salvageable hardwood underneath, you may want to refinish it rather than install LVP over it.

Step Two: Subfloor Assessment and Prep

Once the carpet is out, we assess the subfloor. This is where surprises can happen. Subfloors under carpet are often in worse shape than expected because carpet hides problems. We look for soft spots, squeaks, damaged sections, high or low spots, and any signs of moisture damage.

Minor issues like small holes from tack strips, minor squeaks, and small low spots are addressed as part of standard prep. Significant subfloor damage, large low spots requiring leveling compound, or sections that need to be replaced are priced separately. We always identify these during the estimate so there are no surprises on installation day.

Step Three: LVP Product Selection

For most Austin homes, we recommend SPC LVP with a 6 mil or thicker wear layer. SPC is more dimensionally stable than WPC in Austin heat, handles the moisture vapor that most Austin slabs emit, and is harder underfoot. For bedrooms and low-traffic areas, a standard WPC product is fine and costs less.

Plank width and length affect the look of the finished floor significantly. Wider planks look more modern and make small rooms feel larger. Longer planks reduce the number of end joints and create a cleaner look. We bring samples to every estimate so you can see the options in your actual space before committing.

Step Four: Installation

LVP installation over a prepared subfloor is a floating click-lock system. Planks click together and float over the subfloor without adhesive. We start from the straightest wall in the room and work toward the opposite wall, maintaining consistent expansion gaps at all walls, cabinets, and vertical obstructions.

Transitions between rooms, at doorways, and at changes in floor height are installed after the main field is complete. Baseboards and quarter round are reinstalled or replaced to cover the expansion gaps. The whole process for a typical 1,000 square foot home takes about six to eight hours of installation time.

What the Finished Product Looks Like

A well-installed LVP floor looks clean, modern, and consistent. The transition from carpet to LVP is one of the most dramatic visual upgrades you can make to an Austin home. Rooms feel larger, brighter, and easier to maintain. Clients in South Austin and North Austin consistently tell us it is the best money they have spent on their home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace carpet with LVP in Austin?

A typical Austin home pays $3.50 to $6.50 per square foot installed for LVP replacement over carpet removal. A 1,000 square foot job runs $3,500 to $6,500 depending on the LVP product selected, subfloor condition, and whether transitions and baseboards need to be replaced.

Can LVP be installed directly over carpet?

No. Carpet must be removed before LVP installation. LVP requires a flat, solid subfloor. Installing over carpet creates an unstable surface that causes the LVP locking system to fail and the floor to flex and separate.

How long does carpet removal and LVP installation take?

A typical 1,000 to 1,500 square foot job takes two days. Day one is carpet removal, subfloor prep, and any leveling work. Day two is LVP installation, transitions, and cleanup. Larger homes or those with significant subfloor issues may take three days.

What happens to the tack strips when carpet is removed?

Tack strips around the perimeter of carpeted rooms are removed as part of the carpet demo process. The small nail holes they leave in the subfloor are filled before LVP installation. There is no additional charge for tack strip removal in our standard carpet demo pricing.
