Aging in Place: Safe & Stylish Flooring and Bathroom Upgrades in Austin
Staying in your home as you age means thinking ahead about safety — but it doesn't mean living in a space that looks like a hospital. Here's how to do both.
I work with a lot of homeowners in Sun City Georgetown, Lakeway, and the Westlake Hills area who are thinking about the long game. They love their homes. They've lived there for 20 or 30 years. They want to stay — but they're starting to think about what happens as mobility changes. The good news is that the best aging-in-place upgrades also happen to be the best design upgrades. You don't have to choose between safe and beautiful.
The Flooring Priority: Slip Resistance Without Sacrificing Style
The biggest fall risk in most homes is the bathroom floor — especially when wet. But the living room and kitchen matter too. Here's what we recommend for aging-in-place flooring across Central Texas:
Matte LVP
ExcellentTextured surface, waterproof, comfortable underfoot, easy to clean. Best all-around choice.
Textured Porcelain Tile
ExcellentCOF ≥ 0.60 for wet areas. Large format means fewer grout lines to trip on. Cold underfoot — use radiant heat.
Low-Pile Carpet
GoodSoft landing if a fall occurs. Choose dense, low-pile over plush — easier to walk on with a walker or cane.
Engineered Hardwood
FairBeautiful but can be slippery with socks. Choose a hand-scraped or wire-brushed finish for more texture.
High-Gloss Tile or Hardwood
AvoidLooks great, but slippery when wet. Not recommended for aging-in-place applications.
Thick Plush Carpet
AvoidDifficult to navigate with a walker or wheelchair. Increases trip risk.
The Bathroom: Where Most Falls Happen
According to the CDC, bathrooms are the most dangerous room in the house for adults over 65. The combination of wet surfaces, confined spaces, and the need to step over tub edges creates real risk. Here's the priority order for bathroom safety upgrades:
Curbless Shower Conversion
Converting a tub or standard shower to a curbless (zero-entry) walk-in shower eliminates the step-over that causes most bathroom falls. It also looks incredible — this is the standard in luxury bathroom design right now. We do these across Austin, Georgetown, Lakeway, and Cedar Park.
Grab Bars (Properly Installed)
Not the cheap suction-cup kind. Real grab bars anchored to studs or with proper toggle anchors, rated for 250+ lbs. We install them in the shower, next to the toilet, and anywhere else that makes sense for your specific layout.
Slip-Resistant Tile
Textured porcelain with a COF (coefficient of friction) of at least 0.60 for wet areas. We can match it to your existing tile style — it doesn't have to look like a hospital floor.
Handheld Showerhead
Allows showering while seated on a shower bench. Also makes cleaning the shower much easier. A $150 upgrade that makes a real difference.
Comfort-Height Toilet
Standard toilets are 15 inches high. Comfort-height toilets are 17–19 inches — much easier to sit down and stand up from, especially with limited mobility.
Serving Austin's Active Adult Communities
We work extensively in Sun City Texas in Georgetown — one of the largest active adult communities in the country — as well as Lakeway, Westlake Hills, The Hills, Bee Cave, and other Central Texas communities with significant 55+ populations. We understand the specific needs of these homeowners and the importance of doing the work right the first time.
